Resumo: The maximum use of invested capital is a quest that, in addition to offering greater returns to shareholders in the rail freight sector, also translates into better customer service. Evaluating alternatives that make it possible to increase the operational capacity of a company in an industry that demands high investments is always a very important task, since any evaluation error can lead to a wrong decision and not always lead to the desired results. The permanent way maintenance area in a rail freight transport company is of major importance, especially in a concession model where the responsibility for the infrastructure belongs to the concessionaire. Constant investments in its maintenance and modernization are necessary to achieve the objective of making the most of the availability of the track, offer greater security, reliability in the services of delivery of the loads that are translated in punctuality. The present work aimed to bring the maintenance area to focus and through the analysis of the current situation, comparative investments and potential returns, offer reliable information for decision making that aims to increase the operational capacity of FTL (Ferrovia Transnordestina Logística S/A).
